Bocce is one of the favorite back yard sports. In the more casual "open" play, it can be enjoyed on any surface and in any space. It's also a fun challenge for all ages, so everyone can have a shot. This is also a highly competitive game requiring skill, strategy and luck that is played around the world.
Like many other types of lawn games, bocce has a history going back to early Egyptian times. The first balls were crafted from stone while some time later, coconuts were used. When the game was popularized in Rome, it received its official name, and wood from olive trees was turned into polished rounds for play. At one point, it became a European sensation, but also saw a downfall that led to its legal banning. Time passed and this very popular sport regained its foothold as a favored method of recreation.
You may hear this game referred to as Italian bowling. European and American rules govern official play and an international organization, the World Bocce Association (WBL) works to promote the game. It's also currently one of the featured sports in the Special Olympics.
The game itself is simple in concept, but not necessarily so easy to execute! The field can take two, four or eight players and sets usually include eight balls. A ninth and much smaller ball, called the "pallino" or "jack", is the first to be thrown. When it lands, players must toss their larger colored balls as close to the pallino as possible, potentially knocking out the competition. The person or team closest to the pallino after all balls are thrown receives points. Additional rounds, called "frames," are played until the winner reaches 13 points.
One of the most appealing aspects is that rules and play areas are very flexible. Other than tournament play, teams and individuals can set the field boundaries and determine the point range. This makes it an ideal choice for families that want to include younger children, too!
Most balls are now crafted of a resin composite that is long lasting and durable. For children, plastics provide a lighter weight for throwing. Sizes, measured in millimeters, will vary. Casual players may enjoy the smaller ball sizes, too, as they are much easier to grip. The diameter of the pallino will also vary some and there is no standard size requirement in regulation play.
Bocce balls are typically green and red, but most sets also carry other colors, including red and blue. These are very stylish and add a bit of fun to the game. You'll find them at beginner, tournament and professional levels. Most families and weekend team players will enjoy the tournament and professional styles while kids will love the beginner sets. Cases are designed to keep gear organized and protected. These are great for transporting to the beach or the park. While typically played on close-cut or manicured grass, it can indeed be fun on any surface. Sand presents a greater challenge, too.
A typical playing field is set up alley style and is approximately 60 feet long and 8 feet wide. That's another part of the fun, though, as you can make it any size you want for unofficial play.
